This could all be avoided if in the setup process Dropbox let us point to an existing folder. While this more or less works, it isn't seamless and as I say I got some strange syncs. Then I quit Dropbox and rename the folder I had renamed "Dropbox Old" back to the correct name, and relaunch Dropbox. Then I let Dropbox create the folder it wants to. So what I've done as a workaround (which wound up causing strange out of-date syncing errors somehow), is to rename my existing Dropbox folder something like "Dropbox Old".
